Jhapa district recorded 1,296 road accid;ents in the fiscal year 2081/82 (mid-July to mid-July), leaving 95 people dea;d and 2,073 injured-of whom 139 sustained serious injuries, according to the District Traffic Police Office.
According to the office, action was taken against 52,875 drivers, generating Rs 39.55 million in revenue. Among them, 3,174 were fined for drunk driving, with penalties exceeding Rs 1.8 million.
As part of road safety awareness efforts, 8,461 school students received traffic education, and 1,250 individuals underwent training on the risks of drunk driving.
To modernize traffic management, the district introduced the Traffic Violation Record System (TVRS) and an online fine payment system. Equipment used during the year included 70 reflector belts, 30 traffic signboards, 4 magic lights, 3 breathalyzers, 7 computers, a GoPro camera, and a laptop.
The traffic reform campaign was conducted in collaboration with local governments, schools, hospitals, media, and community centers. Awareness programs targeted students (grades 6–10), auto/city drivers, and the wider public, promoting a shared responsibility for road safety.
