KATHMANDU, JULY 10

Gurupurnima, also known as Ashad Shukla Poornima, is being celebrated today across the country by expressing reverence and gratitude to teachers and mentors.

The festival, rooted in both religious and cultural traditions, honours gurus-those who dispel ignorance with the light of knowledge. “‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘Ru’ means light. A guru removes darkness through wisdom,” explains Prof Dr Devmani Bhattarai, theologian and member of the Nepal Panchang Nirnayak Bikas Samiti.

Academic institutions mark the day as Teachers’ Day, with students acknowledging the role of educators in shaping their academic and personal growth.

The day also commemorates Vyas Jayanti, the birth anniversary of sage Ved Vyas, who compiled the four Vedas and authored 18 Puranas and 18 Upapuranas. He is believed to have been born on the full moon day of Ashadh, making today especially significant in the Hindu tradition.
